Every successful personal essay has two parts: (1) what happens and (2) what the writer makes of what happens. In order to have broad appeal, an essay about visiting your grandmother, for example, must be about more than what you wore, what you ate, and what you talked about. It must tap into something universal. If you’re writing about your life but sense something is missing, your essay likely lacks a clear primal story. How do you know what that primal story is, and how can you improve your story once you’ve located it? Together we’ll practice finding the deep, sometimes hidden story inside great essays.
