In this workshop, we'll write home and we’ll travel. Whether you’re a poet or a prose writer, the process of crafting your place-based poem in this workshop will give you the tools and techniques to write place as a more vivid character in any genre.
Through a series of exploratory free-writing exercises, we’ll gather sensory details. We’ll practice creative research (AKA, you’ll learn to Google like a poet) to gather new images and intriguing facts. We’ll cut up old magazines to gather new language. And by the time you get to the blank page, you’ll have too many ideas. Don’t worry, I’ll guide you through the process of sorting through your ideas and rendering your place on the page. We’ll read out loud and listen for meter and rhyme, and we’ll learn to rearrange and break lines to tell a more engaging story. Come with a place in mind, and leave with a poem.
