In this two-hour workshop with instructor Aidan Forster, students will receive a brief introduction to the practices of online literary publishing, as well as alternative and additional modes of (online) literary togetherness.
Students will identify sites and databases that consolidate a variety of publishing resources (Duotrope, Newpages, Entropy’s quarterly Where-To-Submit list), compile a practice submission, draft a reusable cover letter, and discuss tips for streamlining and curating submissions (how to keep and manage a submission log, what to avoid in cover letters, how to navigate simultaneous submissions, etc.).
Students will also examine alternative and additional forms of literary community, togetherness, and involvement, such as online and site-specific writing programs (for high schoolers and beyond), contests for young and emerging writers, and editorial opportunities for young and emerging writers (i.e., providing a pathway to remote editorial work by learning to identify and pursue opportunities through cover letter writing and application crafting).
By the workshop’s end, students will have a better understanding of how to submit to literary magazines frequently, efficiently, and professionally, as well as how expand the limits of their literary communities.
